Do Business Online With Third Party E-Commerce Merchant Accounts, Or Your Own

E-Commerce merchant accounts are an absolutely essential part of doing business on the Internet, although you certainly don't need your own merchant account in order to start selling. This is good news, because the days of relying on paper check payments are now at an end. Very few retailers even bother to offer checks as an alternative now, and sites which only accept checks have virtually disappeared. This is no surprise when you consider how easy it is to set up online payment alternatives, and how it saves the vendor work at the same time.

In order to start selling online, you just need to sign up with a third party processor who can accept credit card payments through their merchant account. The best known of these is PayPal, although there are now other similar services attempting to compete. If you live in a major country which is able to accept PayPal payments, you can set up an account in just a few minutes. This will allow you to put a payment button on your website to immediately begin accepting payments.

One of the disadvantages of PayPal is that is is very restrictive in terms of the countries in which you are able to accept payments. One alternative to this is 2Checkout, which allows you to accept credit and debit card payments, and also, ironically, allows your customers to pay with PayPal. There will be increased fees to pay if you do choose this option, but it is a way of accepting PayPal payments if you have no PayPal account. ClickBank also allows you to accept both credit card and PayPal payments through their merchant account, but you need to be selling digital products.

As you can see, there is absolutely no need for you to have your own E-commerce merchant accounts in order to do business online, and many people make a lot of money without ever having them. However, having your own merchant account does give your site an increased appearance of professionalism, and it projects an air of legitimacy to your potential customers. It is especially advantageous if you are selling high ticket items.

There are many different providers of E-commerce merchant accounts, and in most cases you will be better off with an account with a specialist supplier than you will be with one from a bank. This is because Internet commerce is still regarded as being high risk in many quarters, albeit mistakenly. Also, these specialist providers are far more accustomed to dealing with Internet based retailers, and can often offer a solution which is better tailored to your needs. Security is a vital consideration, so make sure your gateway incorporates Address Verification Service, and also that the CVV number is required. Most gateways and software can be integrated with most E-commerce merchant accounts.
